Poverty Statistics in our Community:
Food insecurity is the state of being without consistent, reliable access to a sufficient amount of affordable, nutritious food. Montgomery County is an extraordinary place to live and raise a family.
Our community is beautiful and diverse, but even so there exists a disparity of living conditions that often goes unnoticed, and hunger and food insecurity are unmistakably present.
Our county is listed among the wealthiest of the nation, yet:
40% of the elementary children in public schools qualify for free or discounted lunches.
the need for food stamps has grown more than 150%.
One third of Manna’s participants are people living with disabilities or seniors living on a fixed income.
16.3% of the children and 8.3% of the adult population are food insecure, more than any other county in Maryland
9.4% of our county’s children and 6.9% of the adult population live below the poverty line
