Come to the Lyon Center to observe the Lenten fast by sharing a simple supper of soup and bread. During the meal listen to a presentation on a topic related to the social concerns of our Church. This year's theme is “I can see clearly now, the Son has come!” Our goal is to help our members see Christ in everyone, and learn how to engage others with dignity and civility using scripture and Catholic Social Teaching. Each evening begins with a free, simple supper of soup and bread at 6:00 p.m. The presentation starts about 6:20 p.m. followed by questions, ending at 7:30 p.m.
2/28 Deacon Ed McCormack: “Finding Christ & the Holy Spirit in Our Lives & Our World: Insights from the New Testament.”
Living in our secular age it can be quite difficult to sense the presence of Christ in our lives. By considering the two stories the New Testament tells about how God actively relates to creation and humanity we will begin to discern the presence of Christ and the Holy Spirit in our lives, our relationships, our church and the world.
3/6 Fr. Jacek Orzechowski, OFM: “How do we honor the dignity of others?”
“Conversation in the public square is all too often filled with personal attacks and words that assume the worst about those with whom we disagree. We are in need of healing in our families, communities, and country. Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate is a call for Catholics to honor the human dignity of each person they encounter, whether it is online, at the dinner table, or in the pews next to them. Fr. Jacek will give a short presentation, share from his own experience and facilitate the group conversation.
3/13 Johnny Zokovitch: “What is the mission of Pax Christi?” (CANCELLED)
For many Catholics, Lent is a time of serious reflection on what it means to follow Jesus. Johnny will focus on what this call to discipleship looks like in the context of living out our faith concretely in the world today, exploring both the political and personal dimensions of discipleship to Jesus. He'll draw on the work of Pax Christi USA and Pax Christi International, non-governmental organizations committed to the promotion of human rights and peace.
3/20 Daniel Jones: ”What is the Impact of the 2020 Census on our Communities?”
The results of the 2020 Census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities every year for the next decade. That funding shapes many different aspects of every community, no matter the size, no matter the location. Census results affect planning and funding for healthcare, school lunches, plans for highways, support for firefighters and families in need, disaster relief funding for hospitals and fire departments. Census results affect your community every day. Join us as we learn more about the 2020 Census and ways you can help.
3/27 Stephen Schneck: “The Franciscan vision & how it relates to public policies on poverty.”
The Franciscan Action Network sees the interconnectedness of all creation and the common origin of humanity as rooted in God’s loving design for the earth and all people. Through this process of continual conversion, we discover ourselves as co-creators with God and others. Join us to learn how this vision is vital in shaping public policies on poverty.
4/3 L.J. Milone: “Civility as Agape.”
How do we talk to one another in such a polarized age? How can agape – the love Jesus preached – shape our conversations? How can we remain faithful to being critical of both personal attitudes and systems of power that are idolatrous? Come to this talk to explore how we can be gentle prophets, prayerfully grounded in God and peaceful in our conversations with others.
