Dear Haiti Committee and Friends,

You might know by now that a 7.2 earthquake has hit Haiti and the epicenter is on the edge of the Grande Anse, between Baradères and Les Cayes. There is news of widespread destruction in Baradères and other towns further east of Léon. It is reported that this earthquake runs along the same fault as the one that hit in 2010 but is larger than that 7.0 earthquake and twice as energetic according to geophysicists. Tropical Storm Grace is expected to make landfall in Haiti Monday night. This in addition to the COVID crisis in Haiti where only 2% of the population has received only one dose of the two-dose vaccine.

According to Pere Ambroise, the church is destroyed, the second floor of the school is almost crushed, and the Rectory is cracked and unstable. The Cardinal’s home in Les Cayes is completely destroyed. He’s lost everything.

Sr. Denise (in PAP) reports deaths and other damage, including to the health center and the old convent.
