This estimate includes reinforcing the first floor, and repairing the second floor. While Haiti does have construction codes, they are rarely enforced. Fr. Noemi hired an engineer that he worked with at another parish who is known for high quality work. He anticipates the process could take 2 to 3 months depending upon the availability of the engineer and the supplies.
Fr. Noemi received some aid from Caritas, Food for the Poor, and donations from local friends who provide things for the rectory. Everything that comes in goes out the same day to the people in the village. Fr. Noemi and the other residents of the rectory are sleeping in the little school building that is in the courtyard in front of the rectory. They travel to Les Cayes via a dirt road to get settle the accounts and get supplies for the parish. Every 8 days they take vehicle to the garage for repair.
He does not know when school will start. They are considering several options to start the school year. They are currently removing the debris from the second floor of the secondary school.
Thank you to those who have contributed to the Haiti fund. To date, over $40,000 has been donated. We even were contacted by a parishioner at St. Paul’s in St. Petersburg, Florida, who wants to help. They have a twinning parish in Haiti that was not affected by the earthquake. They contacted Theresa Patterson from the Parish Twinning Program of the Americas (PTPA) who recommended he contact SJB. They have collected thousands of dollars for relief to be included in the monies we will send this month.
Our collection will be held October 9 and 10, 2021. This is the time the pastor normally visits SJB and tells us about the accomplishments and the needs of our brothers and sisters there. Of course, he cannot come this year, but we know how great the need is: over 2500 houses destroyed, more than 2000 families without homes, the clinic damaged, the schools destroyed, people living out of doors, 100’s dead and many injured… the list goes on. In his place, members of the Sister Parish Committee will share his message during each mass. Remember, 100% of your donation goes directly to Baradères!
We know the students in our Sister Parish shine! They pass their Haitian national exams at a rate of 100%, even though the national average for passing is between 30 and 40%. Graduates have gone on to become priests, nurses, accountants, and more. Please help us enable Baradères to continue to be a place of hope for the children!
